Review of Mozy Online Backup
Online backup from a company like Mozy is no longer considered an option for most people, but rather a necessity. Everyday people of all walks of life are losing their irreplaceable files to computer viruses, hard drive crashes, theft, fire, flood, you name it. Whatever you think that life can’t throw your way, often it does.
While the fact is that it is so easy to lose valuable computer files a solution in the form of online backup has proven an equally easy way to save those files. Mozy is one of the easiest and most user-friendly backup products available on the market today and their mode of backup and even retrieval are quite simple.
To use Mozy, you simply complete a one-time online download of their software and then select all the files that you want to have backed up. Documents, MP3s, spreadsheets, even pictures, if it is a file, you can back it up. Once the software is on your computer then every time your computer is on Mozy is working in the background saving and backing up your files.
You never have to worry about turning Mozy off or on as it works in conjunction with your computer. Even if you aren’t actually changing anything, Mozy is still on the lookout for something to backup.
Once your files are saved and backed up, Mozy protects them with in the same manner that a bank protects customer information. Double encryption ensures that you are the only one who will ever be able to access your files. Even if a hacker did steel them, they would be left with nothing more than mumbo-jumbo as they could not unencrypt your files successfully.
If by chance you do lose your files then you can retrieve them with another computer and an online connection on a secure page with Mozy. Once you give your user name and password, you can quickly and easily retrieve some or all of your lost files. If you need access to a limited number of files, Mozy has several ways in which you can search for those files.
Many think that the price of such protection would be extremely high, but this is yet another misconception of online backup. Mozy’s protection only costs about five dollars a month and that cost is for an unlimited number of files. In other words, you could backup millions of files using Mozy’s services and the system won’t even flinch.
Perhaps the best attribute of Mozy is that they will allow you to save up to 2 GB of files on their secure system for free for as long as you like. This is an excellent way for you to test drive the system before you decide that you want to shell out some cash for it.
Millions upon millions of files are lost for one reason or another every single year. You can either take the risk that you may or may not be in that mix this year, or you can insure that you will not be with a relatively small investment in an online backup service such as Mozy. The choice is yours, but only you can answer the question, “How much are your files really worth?”

I’ve been using Mozy for a couple of months and so far so good. I have it back up my files every night at 1 am. It’s easy to select the files and folders you want it to backup. 2 GB is plenty for my needs – but not much if you have many videos or other large files.
[...] Mozy: This site offers an impressive 2MB of secure encrypted free online storage to home users. Unlimited storage is also available for a small monthly fee. Mozy also offers a Pro version for businesses. Mozy is such a great program because you can preset backup times and dates and all the work will be done for you. It does require downloading the Mozy software onto your computer. [...]
Mozy is fine backup solution. Thank you for notice.
2gb storage is helpful but you cannot customize your backup timing or days. Still, seems to work fine, but I haven’t tried to restore any file yet.
The only reason I can think of people recommending Mozy is that they haven’t tried to restore their backup. I unwisely tried to use Mozy to restore stuff after reinstalling XP.
My Thunderbird (email) folders were a train wreck. Then the photos. Carefully arranged hierarchies of folders and sub-folders had been mixed up and files had been shoved into new folders that obviously had been created on Mozy’s servers. Fortunately I had another backup on another drive, and that saved years of painstaking work, and all my emails.
Then to add insult to injury, after I had terminated my account with them, they continued to debit my credit card. I emailed them – no answer. This forced me to cut my credit card.
Bunch of cowboys. Use at your peril.
mozy is perfect for my needs. Why? because it’s free. It’s also easy to configure and it works. I have used it to restore a few files and it worked fine.
